Howdy! After completing my first year at A&M, I thought that the members of the Denton County A&M Club might be interested to have an update on their investment. In other words, I thought ya'll might want to hear how I'm doing as an Aggie.
Believe it or not, I'm actually enjoying the classes and academic part of school. I'm learning a lot, and for once most of it is actually relevant to what I want to do with my life. That part is really fun. My grades were high enough this spring semester to be recognized by the Biomedical Sciences program, and I was very excited about that.
In my technical writing class this past semester, we had to write a paper about a problem that we could research first-hand. I chose an intersection on west campus that I thought was unsafe. I researched the problem over the course of two months and found that the intersection was indeed highly unsafe, and I am going to actually send it to the City of College Station Traffic Engineer to see if I can help make the intersection safer for crossing pedestrians.
This summer, I am working back here in the lovely Denton County in an intern type situation. I am gaining skills that I will need when I graduate and enter the workforce. I would not have the knowledge necessary to perform my job without my year at A&M. This makes me very excited to go back to school in the fall.
In terms of the “other education,” I am the proudest counselor for Fish Camp 2003, session C, purple, Camp Woods. My experience with Fish Camp has been phenomenal. Representatives from the whole university banding together for the single task of welcoming and befriending the upcoming class is like nothing I have ever experienced, and is a perfect example of the outpouring of the spirit of the Aggie Family. I am honored to be a part of it.
During my years of high school, I had heard people talk about Aggie Traditions, and until I got there, I had no real understanding of what they meant when they spoke. During the past year, I have experienced Silver Taps, Midnight Yell, Replant, The Big Event, the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band outside my dorm room at 7 am, Football games, and the Aggie Family. All of these are incredible things, but they didn't have a real sense of cohesion until I went to Reed Arena on April 21st and experienced Muster. Seeing everyone all together in silence recognizing those who were no longer with us was more moving than words can express. A good mend of mine was recognizing his grandfather that night, and when his name was called, I was moved to tears. Finally personally understanding that the significance of the traditions was not merely in the act, but rather in the respect and love behind the act makes me feel something deeper than honor for being a part of Tens A&M University.
All I can say to the members of the Denton County A&M club is thank you for giving back to the school that gave so much to you. I knew a year ago that I would be an Aggie forever. I come back and say thank you as a person who now is an Aggie forever. Your support and generosity mean the world to me. Thanks and Gig ‘Em!
Sincerely yours,
Holly Carter
